Work through the following tasks and questions to build a detailed case study for Tatler issue January 2021 (below). This will give you plenty of background information to use in an exam question on print magazines. First, create a new blogpost called Tatler CSP case study.
Introduction - Tatler Media pack
1) Look at the Tatler Media Pack. Go to page 2: how does the editor introduce the magazine?
The editor introduces Tatler as a very high end magazine as it says the richest people read the magazine and mentions how they love to shop which is an aim for many magazine brands.
2) Now go to page 4 of the Media Pack. Focus on the print magazine (NOT tatler.com - the website). List the key demographic details: age, gender %, ABC1 % (social class), HHI (Household Income), % of those living in London and the South East. What do these demographic details suggest about the average Tatler reader?
There is a highly targeted audience that consists of 1.2million adults per month that purchase the magazine and 600k that are social users, the data to show this

These statistics tell us that the average Tatler readers have very high incomes and majority live in London, the ones consuming the magazines are primarily females too.
3) Look at page 6. What do Tatler readers think about fashion? How much do they spend?
They often buy fashion products after seeing it on the magazine, this tells us that the consumers are interested in Tatler and are influenced by it.Those who read the Tatler magazine often spend around £843 million collectively in the past year which shows how many people purchase the magazine.

4) Go to page 10. What are the special editions of Tatler that run throughout the year? What does this suggest about the Tatler audience? What about the psychographic audience group that best fits Tatler?
A pattern you see is that they all are a guide on what do to for example there is a 'watches and jewellery' guide which insinuates that people that read this magazine will be influenced and therefore know what to buy and where from. This tells us the audience is primarily upper class and most people that purchased these magazines buy it as a guide to know what's the best of the best to buy.
Media language
1) What different examples of typography can you find on the cover of Tatler? What are the connotations of the serif and sans serif fonts?
The main title is in serif which is more traditional, establishment and authority and the text on the bottom and the sides are more sans serif which are more modern and bold.
It appeals to the target audience as the font is serif which connotes things like the traditional fonts they used to have back then, established and legit and authority making it seem professional.
3) What are the connotations of the Tatler colour scheme on this particular front cover?
The soft vibrant colours that are pink and blue connotes a edgy tone and the green background suggests nature and wealth.
4) How is the central image designed to create interest in the magazine? Find three reasons for your answer. (E.g. the model, the mise-en-scene such as props, costume and make-up, body position, facial expression etc.)The central image is designed to make the magazine seem expensive with the flowy dress and the colours which signifies union jack flag, it also includes Emma Weymouth which is a famous person who is a British socialite and is also a fashion model.
Representations
1) What celebrities or famous people are mentioned on the cover? Why do you think Tatler put them on the cover?
Tatler readers will be interested to know the Margness of both married-interest in gossip, lifestyle news. Having a person of colour on the front cover of Tatler as central image-may diversity Talter reader and becoming more inclusive.
2) What do the cover lines suggest about the lifestyle of rich people in the UK?
The cover lines helps promise and appeal to the target audience, revealing story's that will appear in the magazine.
3) Looking at the image and cover lines together, what different groups of people are represented on the cover and how are they represented? (E.g. men/women/rich people/race & ethnicity etc.)
The image includes diversity in the Tatler magazine for the readers which makes them seem more inclusive to others as having a person of colour is more inclusive.
The stereotype may be that this magazine is more for higher end people who are in higher class and can afford to buy a magazine like this and may relate and be interested in the things that are in the magazine.
Social and cultural contexts
1) What types of people are NOT featured in Tatler? (Watch the clip above again if you need help with this - the clue is in the title 'Posh People')
Tatler is more of a modern, high end, posh magazine however the lower class people are not seen to buy or be featured in the magazine as they target a certain type of audience.
2) Tatler runs special issues on holidays, spa breaks, cosmetic surgery, watches and jewellery and private schools. What does this suggest about the magazine's representation of life in Britain?
It shows how there is a certain class in Britain that are primarily interested in those kind of things and activities and that that target that kind of audience when producing the magazine and have a type of genre.
3) What audience groups might be offended or insulted by the front cover of Tatler?
The lower class groups may be insulted by it as it targets a higher class group rather than lower/working class as it talks about royalty the magazine itself costs more than usual magazines do, it also may not relate to them as stuff like this maybe don't interest them.
4) Find three other front covers for Tatler from different months. What issues, subjects or people are regularly featured in Tatler?
They are often linked to power and include popular people in it, they are also linked to royalty often and if not its about looking and being perfect, being posh and about the posh, includes topics that may be relevant to the time or may include 'exclusive information'.
