Reception theory: blog task
Create a new blogpost called 'Reception theory'.
1) What is the preferred reading of a media text?
This is the message or ideology/belief the producers want the audience to believe.
2) What is the oppositional reading of a media text?
this is when the consumer takes away an opposite message or belie differently to what the producers intended.

Re-watch the trailer for the film Harry Brown:
3) How does the Harry Brown trailer position the audience to respond to the teenage characters in the film?
They might think teenagers are disrespectful and get caught up in violence and crime due to the people they surround themselves with or the place and area they have been brought up in. This is an example of preferred reading as this is what the producers want them to think.
4) Why might young people reject this reading and construct an oppositional reading of the trailer?
Some young people may reject this reading (preferred reading) and respond to the oppositional or counter ready because they may believe that these young people have good reasoning for acting a certain way or committing crimes.eg. they are victims, the place and area they have been brought up in and maybe their lack education that leads to them having these problems.
Look at this McDonald's advert:
5) Write a 150+ word analysis of the McDonald's advert using preferred, negotiated and oppositional readings.
In analysing the advertisement the different audiences will interpret the message using Stuart halls reception theory looking at the relationship between the text and the audience. He has split this theory into three different parts.one being preferred reading, oppositional reading and negotiated reading. The preferred reading would be how the producers want the audiences to interpret the advert for this one they want the audience to think the sandwich is unique, convenient, fun, visually appealing and gives a enticing imagine to look at and eat.it would make them tempted to buy it as it looks aesthetically pleasing. On the other hand negotiated reading recognise that some audiences may transcribe that its an unhealthy product and is only cheap because of the way they make it and how its not necessarily y good for them. That may be why some audiences would not like to buy it and why it may have been advertised incorrectly.
