Denotation & Connotation blog tasks: advert analysis

Create a new blogpost in your GCSE Media blog called 'Denotation and connotation'.

1) Write an analysis of the WaterAid advert above using denotation, connotation and analysis. What can you see? What are the deeper meanings in the advert? What does the advert communicate to the audience? How might an audience react after seeing the advert?

Denotation: This printed advertisement consists of a young African boy stood in front of a rural suburban village(technical code). It also displays that the child looks malnourished and hungry(symbolic code). It also features a rustic back round(technical code) and the Water Aid logo on the top left(symbolic code) with the slogan(written code).

Connotation: The slogan is deliberately made large next to the little boy who looks emaciated to emphasise what Water Aid is trying to get across so its made clear what they want and what the underfed and vulnerable boy needs. The catchphrase "Dig toilets Not graves" has consciously been used as they are aware that anyone who comes across this advert will feel sympathetic and feel as if they need to help. They also intentionally put the young boy next to the large writing to make the target audience empathise with what's been said and what they might be going through.

Analysis: The deliberate choice of wording, setting and character placement could hint that once the audience donates then the characters life (and those who are also in his position) will have a huge impact and change for the good.

2) Now choose your own choice of advert from Google images. Save it to your documents, insert it into your blogpost and write an analysis using denotation and connotation, explaining what the advert is communicating to the audience.

Denotation:

This Nike advertisement consists of blue, white, green. It also features a blue sky background (technical code), Nike logo (symbolic code) and a slogan (written code).

Connotation:.
The slogan is deliberately in front of the woman running showing that she is chasing what the slogan is saying (Move more, Move better).Nike has used the blue sky background to show that feeling of being fresh and is more of a youthful colour which shows what Nikes target audience is. The woman is very fit which can encourage people to develop a figure like hers.

Analysis:
The deliberate choice of a bright blue sky with a young fit girl can influence consumers to purchase the tank top as there might think that buying the tank top will encourage them to purchase the top.
