Mise-en-scene;stranger things analysis

Create a new blogpost called 'Mise-en-scene: Stranger Things analysis'.

1) Choose THREE aspects of mise-en-scene (e.g. costume, lighting and setting) and write a short paragraph for each about the denotation and connotation and what is communicated to the audience.

Lighting: At the start of the scene you see a man running through a hallway with flickering lights which portrays a eerie affect. There also was a scene at the end of the video where the light bulb kept on flashing which makes the audience feel suspense. Lighting is a very important factor in this episode/scene as the genre is very science-fiction type so they added these effects where it is a scary and uneasy feeling to portray the genre and type of vibe hey wanted to give.

Settings: There were a lot of dark settings where there would be dark hallways, dark houses, going home on a bike at night which makes the audience feel apprehensive. The scene where they were in the basement shows the difference between how the surroundings there were completely different to how the surroundings looked upstairs. This part and majority of the whole video is set at night which also makes the audience feel a type of way by doing so .

props: The props in the end scene consists of a gun which represents that the character feels on edge and feels as if their life could potentially be in danger, that also tells us he character may know something that the audience may not know which makes viewers feel on edge . There were also other props like bikes that they used to go back home which maybe tells us that they live in the same neighbourhood and are close friends.

Extension tasks

Watch the extract again. Try and write an analysis of the other aspects of mise-en-scene. Work through all the aspects of CLAMPS (the mnemonic we use to remember mise-en-scene).

An aspect of mise-en-scene is where all the kids are sitting on the table and playing games however their surroundings give off a supernatural and sinister feeling which might make the audience sense something that may happen.
