Summer project tasks
Summer project tasks
Complete the following tasks on a blogpost on your Media blog called 'Summer Project: coursework planning':
1) Research: Music videos
Watch the following music videos and analyse an aspect of media language for each one:
Music video 1: Marshmello x YUNGBLUD x blackbear - Tongue Tied
How is narrative used in this music video to engage the audience?
How is narrative used in this music video to engage the audience?
The narrative engages the audience as there's a clear storyline which keeps the audience hooked and interested as they are trying to get away from the police and escape and I think his girlfriend tries to sort things out but ends up getting taken away too and its very emotional for maybe some viewers to watch but also entertaining for some.
Music video 2: Years & Years - I Wish I Knew
How is camerawork and mise-en-scene used in this video? Use CLAMPS to remember the different aspects of mise-en-scene.
Mise-en-scene is used as the costumes are very simple with a t shirt and simple colours which makes you think its a simple calm song or maybe even emotional song too but towards the end you realise that's not the case. The lighting is bright as its during the day. The camera work starts off with a medium shot of him singing and then as the song goes on it starts to be a close up of just his face and then towards the end of the song the tone changes and becomes more upbeat and then you can see their whole body.
Music video 3: Foals - Hummer
How is editing used in this music video to engage the audience?
The editing is done where you almost feel like you are there with them seeing how its being produced as you see the backdrop from a larger angle and then you can also see each individual instrument then the singers dancing having fun and singing which can also make the audience fell the same.
Music video 4: Your choice
Select a music video of your choice and analyse an element of it e.g. narrative, camerawork, editing, visual effects etc. If you're not sure which video to use you could watch some of the following:
- Ariana Grande - One Last Time- This music video makes the audience engaged as at the start you don't hear music and you almost feel like your watching a movie by her clothes and her being in a car, someone speaking to her and there a lot of commotion but then later on the music starts and the narrative continues.
- Ed Sheeran - Shape of You
You may also want to look a completely different, creative approach to music video - such as these Lego stop motion productions and how they use narrative:
2) Music video planning
Plan out the basic details for your music video. What song do you plan to use? Will your video be performance or narrative based (or both)? Complete the following on your blog:
Artist and song you have chosen: “cups” by Ana Kendrick
Plan for music video (narrative/performance etc.): The main message for the music video is saying goodbye and moving on from the past, reminiscing/remembering all the good times you’ve had but also having the strength to understand you need to grow and overall gain independence and change as a person.
Link to brief (one small step to improving your community): By gaining independence for yourself you are improving the community by not needing to lean on anyone or rely on other people for things which give them more time to focus on themselves.
Actors/performers you plan to use: My cousins but characters are like a group of friends
Locations: Home, school corridor, park bench, bedroom with posters and photos.
Costume/make-up/props required: Photos, cups, phone.
3) Statement of Intent
On the same Summer Project blogpost, write the rough first draft of your 300-word Statement of Intent for the two-minute music video you plan to create. The final draft of this document will be submitted to the exam board alongside your music video production and is worth 10 marks of the overall 60 marks available.
Guidance and minimum requirements can be found in the AQA brief from their NEA Student Booklet.

For this music video I intend to make one about moving on in life and becoming independent and seeing how not only can that benefit for you but also your community and those around you, in this video there will be a few different filming locations which will be things like school corridors, the main characters home, potentially a park where she sits on a bench etc. This girl is someone who holds great attachment towards her friends however she’s getting ready to move out for university and go explore in other places but London, she’s exited to find her true self and become an independent woman however the thought of her leaving her friends and family behind tortures her, in the music video you will see flash backs of her hanging out with friends with memories full of laughter but at one point her smile fades as reality hits she will be leaving . She will walk through familiar places one last time before leaving to a city she knows nothing and nobody. She will meet her best friend and gives her a tight hug goodbye and leaves them a note behind saying how much she will miss them. There will be a close up of them letting go of each others hand and then her stepping onto the coach. In the last verse her friends will meet up again in that same cafe however her seat will be empty but her same cup is still in that table then they all look and smile in remembrance for her. Lastly the end will show cut scenes if the friends in the cafe and her journey. Within this story line there will be close up shots of their hands held together for example and medium shots of her in the coach sitting and there will be use of titles to embody the main message of the music video which is her in the end being able to let go and finally be independent.
