Read this article in The Week magazine on the rise of social media influencers and answer the following questions:
1) What years did YouTube, Twitter and Instagram launch?

2) What is the definition of an influencer?
A person who has become well known through regular social media posts and is able to promote a product or service by recommending or using it online.
3) Give an example of an influencer and how many followers they have. Try and add some additional information, brand associations or other statistics if you can.
Many of the most famous influencers, such as Kim Kardashian (who has 221 million Instagram followers) graduated from reality TV – another carefully crafted version of “real life”.
4) How big is the influencer industry according to the article?
Very. By the end of 2019, the influencer marketing industry was worth some $8bn a year. One recent report by Insider Intelligence predicted that it would grow to $15bn globally by the end of 2022. The tech consultant SignalFire thinks that “the creator economy” – built by those who post and monetise content online – employs more than 50 million people, and is the fastest-growing sector for small businesses in the world.
5) What are the problems associated with being an influencer?
Some of the problems they can face are things like lots of hate, scandals, the risk of being cancelled, loosing brand deals, loosing followers and fans, being known or getting famous for something bad which can ruin the brand image.
6) Why is it suggested that audiences actually like being sold products by influencers?
Its so that if these influencers build trust with their followers that will attract more brands that will want to work with these influencers as they know they're followers will trust them and would want to purchase the product they are promoting.
7) What representation of beauty is often found on Instagram or other influencer sites?
The New Yorker’s Jia Tolentino noted the gradual emergence, among “professionally beautiful women” today, of a look known as “Instagram face”. It’s “a young face, of course, with poreless skin and plump, high cheekbones”, long lashes and full lips
8) What is YOUR opinion on influencers? Are they a positive or negative influence on our society and culture? Why?
I think they are good in some cases as you will find some of them will be truthful; however there are some who lie about the product to get more brand deals and therefore we aren't 100 sure what these people are promoting are actually good and real.
