OSP: Rashford and Kardashian Language and Representation Blog Tasks

OSP: Language and Representation Blog Tasks

Work through the following tasks to cover the Language and Representation key concepts for our OSP CSPs:

Language

1) Make two lists - one of website conventions used on Marcus Rashford and Kim Kardashian's official website and one of social media conventions found on their Instagram pages.

Marcus Rashford- website convention

-Brand image-minimal text, unique (sans serif/modern)

-Colour scheme-dark/minimal

-Colour scheme-more vibrant link to his personality?

-Body language-suit + hands reinforce seriousness, poise (stance) looks focused and ready.

-Low angle shot- technical code seen as powerful.

-Navigation bar menu- minimal text.

-Rashford- Instagram

-Bio

-Kim K- Instagram

-Highlights- more 'pinned' promotion of fashion brand and makeup brand.

2) How does Marcus Rashford's website and social media promote his brand? Give at least three examples of different pages / posts / images from his website or social media.

They promote him through his website, twitter and Instagram.

3) How does Kim Kardashian's website and social media promote her brand? Give at least three examples of different pages / posts / images from her brand websites or social media.

They promote her brand through tweets announcing when they are launching new products, highlights to advertise existing products, and in her bio her business social media accounts which is easily accessible to everyone.

4) How does Marcus Rashford's online presence use the narrative of his childhood upbringing to create a positive brand identity?

His childhood links to a positive brand identity through growing up lower class with a single mum who worked full time and has struggled a lot and by him growing up to be successful not only proves that people in his position can be successful too but he also wrote to the government to help other like him which puts him in a positive light.

5) How does Kim Kardashian's website and social media promote other media products or websites using the Kardashian brand (e.g. Keeping Up With The Kardashians TV show)?

Her surname in general bring a lot of attention to her the name Kardashian is very well known through their show as well as posting with her family and sisters who are also famous and well known so all of this promotes her brand.

Representations

1) How does Marcus Rashford use different aspects of mise-en-scene (e.g. clothes/costume/ settings/locations) to create representations of himself on his website and social media?

On his website his main colour scheme on the opening page is all black and quite minimalistic, he also wears a black suit which is quite formal and reinforces seriousness and his poise and looks more focused and ready. However on the next page there's a quite a lot of colour  and lots of pictures of him playing football and wearing his team colour of Manchester which is like the costume.

2) What examples can you find of website pages, social media posts or aspects of his brand that create a positive representation of Marcus Rashford? You may wish to comment on his discussion of family or his campaigns - his page on the FareShare campaign website may help with this question.

On his website you can see a section all about the books he has which attracts a younger audience which also make him seem inclusive and teaches children to be resilient.

3) How does Marcus Rashford's online presence challenge stereotypes? Think about gender (masculinity), race/ethnicity, social class or football here.

Some may think men aren't as nice and understanding but he has actually helped a lot of people and young people that used to be in his position. He is also a black man so some may think a guy of that race wont be able to be successful but he was and made it out.

4)  What representation of celebrity is created by Kim Kardashian's website and social media? How are audience encouraged to view celebrity?

She is seen as the beauty standard of todays generation and people up to her and her sisters despite the amount of work she has done.

5) What gender stereotypes are reinforced or challenged in Kim Kardashian's online presence?

That women have work done and sometimes can be all fake which is a huge stereotype.
