Create a new blogpost called 'Advertising: Key conventions'. Look at this Skittles advert:


Part 1: Skittles advert analysis

1) What key conventions of print adverts can you find and what are the connotations or deeper meanings of each convention? For each convention, write about how it communicates meaning to the audience. See the Maltesers advert above for an example of how to do this.
-USP-Information about what makes the product special or different.
-Logo-this is sometimes the brand name, sometimes a picture associated with the brand (eg. Nike).
-Slogan-this is a catchy phrase summing up the ethos.
Possibly some text(called anchorage text)  that gives us more information and focus about the product.
-Image showing the product-demonstrating what it does or what some of the features are just be showing the product.
-Settings-including the colour scheme with connotations.

2) What is the USP (unique selling point) for Skittles and how do you know? Does the advert use any of persuasive techniques listed above?
I think the settings and the colour scheme is a good USP for skittles as they have rainbow colours that sounds out and the setting is unique as its in the clouds and the colours compliment each other. I also think the slogan is a good USP as its catchy and interesting and because of that it is a good strategies to attract an audience and customers.

Part 2: Advert research

Use Google images to research classic adverts. Find examples for the following and add them to your blog:

1) An advert with a clear brand identity


2) An advert that uses shock tactics or a controversial idea


3) An advert that creates a a strong emotional connection to the audience


Bonus: Can you find an advert that shows women or men in a way they don't normally appear (this is an example of representation in media - subverting the typical representation of gender. We will be studying this next week!)

Create a new blogpost called 'Mise-en-scene: Stranger Things analysis'.  1) Choose   THREE  aspects of mise-en-scene (e.g. costume, lighting and setting) and write a short paragraph for   each  about the   denotation  and  connotation  and what is communicated to the audience.   Lighting: At the start of the scene you see a man running through a hallway with flickering lights which portrays a eerie affect. There also was a scene at the end of the video where the light bulb kept on flashing which makes the audience feel suspense. Lighting is a very important factor in this episode/scene as the genre is very science-fiction type so they added these effects where it is a scary and uneasy feeling to portray the genre and type of vibe hey wanted to give.
