Work through the following tasks to complete our OSP work:

Audience

1) Who are the potential target audiences for Marcus Rashford and Kim Kardashian's online content? Try and cover both demographics and psychographics.

For Marcus Rashford his target audience for young teenage boys who enjoy playing football but also to older young men who are near his age bracket who really like football as well and follow him on his social media accounts to see what is going on in his life. 

For Kim Kardashian her target audience is also young girls but also older women as they see her as an influencer and look up to what she does and buys therefore she creates a brand out of her audience. 

2) Marcus Rashford’s online presence is partly driven by his excellent use of social media. How does he use social media to engage with his fans and make them feel part of his brand?

He uses his social media to engage with his fans through his Instagram page, posting videos pictures and story's. He can also engage with his through tweets on twitter , he can reply to them and talk about all the hot topics through twitter as well.

3) What is Instagram engagement rate and what engagement rates do Marcus Rashford and Kim Kardashian have? 

Marcus Rashford’s power as an influencer is shown by his engagement rate of 6% (although recently this has dropped to 3.2% due to increasing his follower count and focusing more on football rather than his brand development).


4) Go to Marcus Rashford and Kim Kardashian's X or Instagram account. Find and screenshot/link three posts that show the different aspects of their brand e.g. Relatable person (normal, down to earth), Campaigner (interested in politics), Celebrity (e.g. awards ceremony or fashion), Brand promotion (e.g. selling a product).















5) What audience pleasures are provided by Marcus Rashford's online presence? What about Kim Kardashian? Try and apply Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory here
The audience pleasures from knowing what's going in in his life which links to the Blumber and Katz theory of surveillance as they can see what's going on and it gives the audience a pleasure from feeling like they are involved in their life and apart of it.

6) Applying Stuart Hall's Reception theory, what would a preferred and oppositional reading of Marcus Rashford and Kim Kardashian's online presence be?

  • Preferred reading (people who support Rashford/Kardashian):They believe in what they promote and see them almost like friends, enjoy their content they see.
  • Oppositional reading (people who criticise Rashford/Kardashian): Think they're personality and what they put out on social media is all a façade and don't like how they approach their audience.


Industries

1) What is Marcus Rashford and Kim Kardashian's net worth and how does their online presence help them to make money? 

Kim Kardashian net worth is estimated to be around £1.7 to £1.9 billion pound and Marcus Rashford's net worth is estimated to be around £60-£64 million and they're only presence helps them through brand deals, partnerships and social media in general as well as their personal jobs.

2) What companies/brands are Rashford and Kardashian associated with? Why might they want to be linked to those celebrities?

Kim is associated with SKIMS, Kardashian Kloset, SKKN, SKKY, nike for the partnership with her own brand SKIMS.

Marcus is associated with Nike, Burberry, Coca Cola, CeraVe and NatWest.

3) Research Twitter/X and Instagram. Who owns the companies, how do they make money and how much profit did they make last year?

X is owned by Elon Musk after his 2022 acquisition, making money primarily through advertisements and subscriptions and the revenue it makes is about  £39 billion.

4) What are the worries about Instagram’s negative effects?

The main affects can be it ay be too explicit for the younger generation who easily have access to social media as well as potential predators, user generated content made by others, AI and people not knowing what to believe and people getting scammed. 

5) How do social media platforms manage online abuse on their platforms and why has Marcus Rashford drawn attention to this? How might this change in the future?

After Marcus missed the penalty at the euros he received a huge amount of racist hate on social media and abuse from football fans and he highlighted this issue after facing these problems leading him to demanding easier solutions like account deactivations, leading to a pressure for stricter laws. 

6) What happened by law in 2022 that changed the way the internet is regulated? Write three changes that this new law may bring in and explain why it is difficult to regulate the internet.

Protects children and adults, stops cyber bullying and abuse, avoiding scams and predators and its often difficult to regulate as anyone can sign up to make a social media account.
