Blog Tasks: Daily Mirror case study
Work through the following questions to cover the Language and Representations key concepts for the Daily Mirror.
Language
1) Write the definition of the following key language for newspaper front pages (you may want to add an example for each from our Daily Mirror CSP):
Masthead: title
Pug: direction to the reader to the main cover story
Splash Head: single emotive word
Slogan: live up to the name
Dateline: when it was published or the time of the situation
Byline: who wrote the newspaper article.
Standfirst: immediate use of emotive language
2) What is the main story on the CSP edition of the Daily Mirror (see above)? Make sure you learn the headline and what the story is about.
The main story is based on fujitsu which is a scandal based on the mirror coming together with a tech company that has taken money from innocent people and hasn't given it ack to this day.
3) What is the 'pug' or smaller celebrity story on the front cover? Why might it appeal to Daily Mirror readers?
The pug is a verbal code which in the mirror says "exclusive; post office scandal" which is directed to the reader and the main cover story. The word "exclusive" suggests how important the daily mirror is.
4) Why is the choice of news stories, content and page design on the Mirror CSP front page typical of a tabloid newspaper?
The use of sans serif and small bit of serif attracts a certain group of people and their potential audience as well as its masthead being the daily mirror and the "mirror" reflecting British society and "daily" suggests up to date news.
5) What is the balance on the Daily Mirror front page between images, headlines and text?
We see a range of things such as masthead, small images, a pug, kicker, main cover image, stand first, and a slogan all being located in the main cover image.
Representations
1) What political party does the Daily Mirror support? Is there any evidence to support this in the CSP pages we have studied?
Daily mirror is less formative, its typography for times is sans seif- modern, different sizes to make it stand out and easier to read and spot.
2) How does the Daily Mirror represent the Post Office in the CSP pages? Why do you think they present them in this way?
The daily mirror presents post offices in a bad light as its showcasing the scandal they've one through and how innocent peoples money have been taken from them and yet to be reimbursed and some have even died, many people have lost their jobs due to a lack of security and that has ruined their reputation.
3) How is Fujitsu represented in the Daily Mirror CSP pages? Look particularly at the use of images on the front cover and the section on Fujitsu on the inside page. Give detailed answers with evidence from the CSP pages.
Fujitsu are represented as villains as on the news paper the colour font is in red and below that the font is in yellow and black which denotes a warning sign potentially that people should be warned about Fujitsu and their wrong doings.
5) Read the main articles on the inside pages. How are different people, groups and organisations represented in the Daily Mirror? Does this reinforce or subvert the stereotypes we usually see in the media?
4) How are the Conservative Party represented in the Daily Mirror? Again, provide evidence from the CSP pages to support your answers.
The mirror often portrays the conservative party as rich and powerful and almost like they are elite even at times can be portrayed as villainous who prioritise wealth and social power over social welfare.
5) Read the main articles on the inside pages. How are different people, groups and organisations represented in the Daily Mirror? Does this reinforce or subvert the stereotypes we usually see in the media?
Usually the stereotypes are reinforced as we see women wearing makeup and dresses with hair done which reinforces the usual stereotype for women even most commonly men are viewed as villains and there are often paparazzi shots to make it seem like a person has been caught out however at times there are staged photos which could make the person seem more innocent.
